Your Guest Sees a Card. Here's What You See: A Digital Loyalty Card From Both Sides

How a digital loyalty card works from both sides: guests save it to Apple or Google Wallet with no app, and you see who comes back, when, and who stamped.

Every loyalty program has two users. Your guest, who wants it to take five seconds. And you, who wants to know if it's actually bringing people back.

Paper punch cards only work for the first one, and barely. The guest gets a card that lives in a wallet or a drawer. You get nothing: no idea who's holding a card, who came back, or whether your staff stamped three cards for their friends.

A digital loyalty card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet changes both sides. Here's what each side actually sees, step by step, using a fictional restaurant, Juniper & Rye Kitchen.

What your guest sees

1. A QR code on the table. Scan. Save. No app.
The guest scans the QR code on a table sign, types their name, and taps Save to Apple Wallet or Save to Google Wallet. That's the whole signup.

There's nothing to download. Apple Wallet and Google Wallet already come on the phone, and both are built for exactly this. Apple's own help page says Wallet lets you “add, use, and share eligible passes, tickets, coupons, rewards cards, and more” (Apple Support, support.apple.com/en-us/111112). Google describes the same thing: “you can store and use digital copies of your loyalty and gift cards” (Google Wallet Help, support.google.com/wallet/answer/12059603?hl=en).

No Wallet on the phone? With Westify, the card also works in the browser with its own link, so nobody is left out.

2. A stamp every visit
At checkout, your server scans the card from their own phone and the stamp lands on the guest's card. No hole punch, no “I forgot my card”, no POS integration to set up.

3. The reward, right on the card
When the card is full, the reward shows up on the card itself: “Dessert on the house”, “A free coffee”, “Late check-out”. The guest shows it, your team honors it.

That's the entire guest experience. It has to stay that simple. Every extra field, app download or account password is a reason to say “maybe next time”.

What you see

This is the part a paper card can never give you. In Westify's Loyalty program, the owner panel shows:

Who comes back, and when
• Card members, visits and rewards redeemed, at a glance.
• Coming back: your return rate, and how many card members came twice or more.
• When they come: your busiest days and hours, so you know when your regulars actually show up.
• Each customer's activity: who joined, who's been stamping, and when.

The question “is this program working?” stops being a feeling.

Every stamp, and who gave it
Each person on your team signs in on their own phone with their name and a personal 4-digit PIN, and every stamp is recorded with who gave it. The panel's Who stamped view shows each stamp, the staff member who gave it and when. If a server leaves, you remove them from your panel and their phones stop stamping. If stamps look generous on a slow Tuesday, you can see exactly where they came from.

A “We miss you” note, automatically
You can turn on automatic notes that go to the card itself: a Welcome note when someone joins, and a We miss you note when a guest hasn't been back in 14, 30, 45 or 60 days (you choose). It's an update to the Wallet card, not a text message. You don't need the guest's phone number.

One honest caveat: how and when a card update appears is up to the guest's phone and their Wallet settings, so think of it as a gentle nudge, not a guaranteed alert.

Give every new guest a head start

Here's one design choice worth making on day one. In a well-known field study at a car wash, researchers handed out two kinds of loyalty cards. One needed 8 stamps and started empty. The other needed 10 stamps but came with 2 already stamped, so both needed the same 8 visits. 34% of the head-start cards were completed, versus 19% of the blank ones (Nunes & Drèze, “The Endowed Progress Effect”, Journal of Consumer Research, 2006, doi.org/10.1086/500480).

The lesson: a card that feels already started gets finished more often. In Westify you can give new members welcome stamps, so their card never starts at zero. Your guest sees a card that's already on its way. You see more of those cards completed.

What a loyalty card should never do

Reward visits, never reviews. Google's policy allows businesses to ask for reviews of a genuine experience “without offering incentives to do so or attempting to influence the rating or the contents of the review” (Maps user-generated content policy, support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en). So no “extra stamp for a 5-star review”. Ask every guest for a review the same way, with nothing in exchange, and keep the card about coming back. A quick checklist for both sides

Your guest should see:
• One QR code, one name field, one Save button
• No app to download
• A stamp every visit
• A head start (welcome stamps)
• The reward right on the card

You should see:
• How many guests have a card
• Who comes back, and when
• Every stamp and who gave it
• Rewards redeemed
• Automatic “Welcome” and “We miss you” notes

If your current program misses anything on the first list, guests won't join. If it misses anything on the second, you're running it blind.

FAQ

Do my guests need to download an app?
No. The card saves to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which come with the phone. Without Wallet, it works in the browser.

Do I need to connect my point of sale?
No. Your staff stamps from their phone by scanning the guest's card.

Can I see who my regulars are?
Yes. The panel shows your return rate, how many members came twice or more, your busiest times and each customer's activity.

Does it send text messages?
No. Welcome and “We miss you” notes are updates to the Wallet card. Westify doesn't need the guest's phone number for them.

How much does it cost?
The Loyalty program is included in Westify's Growth and Enterprise plans. On Basic it's an add-on at $7.99 per location per month. Want to try a loyalty card on its own first? Use the free tool below.
